Fiber Classes

All classes meet BICSI standards and follow TIA/EIA Commercial building cabling standards. These include TIA 568 building cabling standard, TIA 569 pathways and spaces standard, TIA 606 administration standard, and TIA 607 grounding and bonding standard. Cable Links Consulting has developed training partnerships with community colleges throughout California and other western states.

COURSES

Course 01 – Fiber Optic Principles and Theory (8 hours)

These BICSI ACCREDITED complementary courses, totaling 8 hours, are designed for managers, technicians, installers and decision-makers who desire a basic overview of the technology and products associated with fiber optics applications. Both the fiber optic novice and those who are currently working in the fiber optic industry will find these courses beneficial. These courses will include:

  • Introduction to Fiber Optics - Theory and application
  • Fiber Optic Cables - MM and SM, Connectors and Splices
  • Planning, Construction and Industry Standards - BiCSi, NEC, and TIA
  • Light Sources - LED and Laser
Course 05 - Fiber Optics Applications & Installation: Lucent/Avaya Specialization (8 hours)

This BICSI ACCREDITED 8 hour course was created for those who want to learn or improve their ability to install and work with fiber optics. This hands-on workshop specializes in Lucent products. The course includes intensive training in connectorization and termination of Lucent connectors and splices.

  • Hands-on assembly - cable preparation, ST and SC connectors
  • Splicing Methods - CSL Splices (mechanical splice)
  • Test Equipment and Troubleshooting - Intro to OTDR, Optical Loss Meters
  • Fiber Optic Safety - Safe Field Practices

Course 07 - Fiber Optics Applications and Installation - 3M/AMP/VALDOR/SIECOR Specialization ( 8 hours)

This eight-hour course was created for those who want to learn or improve their ability to install and work with fiber optics. This hands-on workshop is a multi-vendor connectorization/termination course that includes basic installation and repair training using materials commonly found in the industry.

  • Hands-on Assembly - Cable preparation, ST and SC Connectors.
  • Product Lines - Siecor, Unicam, ST and SC connectors, 3M Hotmelt, AMP Lightcrimp Plus, Valdor Compression
  • Test Equipment and Troubleshooting - Intro to OTDR, Optical Loss Meters
  • Fiber Optics Safety - Safe Field Practices

Course 41 – Fusion/Mechanical Splicing - Fundamentals and Applications (6 hours)

Finally, a fusion course that covers everything you need to know about fusion splicing in one class. This course was created for technicians, repairmen, and splicers desiring to increase their knowledge of fusion. In this 6-hour course, participants will receive extensive hands-on training in LID fusion splicing. The course will include:

  • Singlemode fusion splicing - 8.3 micron
  • Multimode Fusion Splicing - 62.5 and/or 50 micron
  • Basic troubleshooting principles

Course 51 - Fiber Optics Test Equipment and Troubleshooting (4 hours)

These courses are for individuals interested in expanding their ability to test and troubleshoot in fiber optic systems. Troubleshooting techniques covered in this course will allow those in the field to use their time more efficiently. Each course is four hours in length and includes three hours of workshop-based instruction and one hour of advanced practice. The courses will cover:

  • Theory
  • Operation and Application of Fiber Optic test equipment, including:
    • OTDR
    • Optical loss meters
    • light meters
  • Documentation - Standard Formatting of test results including dB losses and dB gains

Advisory: Knowledge of Category 5E/ 6 - applications and installation

Course 61 - Advanced Fiber Optics and Category5E/ 6: Networking and Design (24 hours)

A three-day, 24-hour course designed for supervisors, managers, technicians and individuals requiring an expanded knowledge of fiber optic and CAT 6 systems. It will enable you to piece together and understand the components of a complete telecommunications system. You will learn network design (design and theory of fiber optic and Category 6 networks), components (attenuators, switches, repeaters, and electrical to optical-optical to electrical, multi-plexers, hubs, patch panels, and more), cable routing (the do's and don'ts of routing a system), standards and codes (TIA, BICSI and NEC) and test equipment (application of OTDR and Optical Loss Meter to an entire system).

  • The course provides good background for bidding, compiling bill of materials, blueprint reading, and fulfilling drawing requirements to obtain permits.
  • Basics covered in the first half of the course are combined with practical considerations enabling you to complete actual design plans as part of the course.
  • Advisory: Completion of Fiber Optics Basics and Category 5E/6 Application and Installation or equivalent knowledge and/or experience.
Course 71 – Outside Plant Cabling (24 hours)

A BICSI ACCREDITED three-day course that covers both copper and fiber environments. The course includes an intensive hands-on yes; that covers outside plant (osp) cable preparation, use and installation of splice enclosures, fan-out installations, ICU installations, bonding and grounding, proper use of block and tackle and additional cable pulling techniques, aerial and direct bury practices and procedures. Safety issues are covered, including dangers of outside telecommunications equipment structures, gas detection procedures and other safety measures.
